& Key West - June 3 - 10, 2012

Instead of taking our annual vacation to South Padre, we kicked it up a notch this year. Jay bid and won a charity auction for a week long stay in someone's private home on Sunset Key. It's a beautiful, manmade island right off Key West, and there's a ferry boat that runs between the islands every 30 minutes.

Sunday 6/3

We arrive in Key West, and everyone is happy!

Our first sunset on the island...

Monday 6/4

Our first morning on Sunset Key. Here's a few pictures of the island, and some views from our place.

This is the view from our 2nd floor balcony

Notice the cruise ship.

The 'main street' of the Sunset Key. There are no cars on the island - only golf carts.

The dock, and ferry that shuttles you between Sunset Key and Key West.

Beautiful Sunset Key

Our ferry goes right under the cruise ships docking ropes.

Monday afternoon, we took a seaplane ride to the Dry Tortuga islands and explored Fort Jefferson.

This was not the plane we used - we just posed for pictures here.

I was the copilot (scary)

You can see fort Jefferson just under the wing.

It really was an amazing place - I wish I had more time to explore.

You can see Fort Taylor at the tip of Key West

Looking across Key West, you can see Sunset Key just behind the cruise ship.

Another view of Sunset Key just off Key West.

Tuesday 6/5

We started Tuesday morning with a walk around the island, and then stopped at the resort pool.

Tuesday evening, Jay and I took the kids out on a fishing boat from 5:00 till 9:00pm. We tried to catch Tarpin, but none were biting. Eventually, the kids did catch some fish. Austin caught a 'fish face' - a shark ate the fish as he was pulling it in. Christopher got a nice fish that we fried up and ate later.

While Jay and I were fishing with the kids, the girls hit the bar.

Wednesday 6/6

Wednesday morning, all the girls - plus me - went to Key West to go shopping and eat lunch....and drink.

Key West can be a little weird - this guy, and the couple on the balcony are statues.

There's lots to see and do on Duval Street

No, that's not Johnny Dep.

While out with the girls, we visited the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum

We had an AWESOME meal, and a pretty awesoe bill as well.

Thursday 6/7

Jay and Sherrie had a 3:00 appointment at the spa. Before that, we managed to cram in a visit to Earnest Hemingway's house, the Southernmost Point, and Fort Taylor.

Six (or seven) toe cat.

Here's some pics from the Southernmost Point.

That night, we went on a ghost tour.....

This guy REALLY believed in ghosts.

Basically, he tried to tell everyone the 'orbs' you can see in flash pictures were ghosts.
OHHH - there's one in the upper right of this pic!

So everyone was looking at their pics to see the 'ghosts'

He'd take us to an old house and tell scary stories of how it was haunted.

Now, the trick is - you have to use a flash. Look at the two pictures above and below.
Above was taken with no flash, and there are no 'orb ghosts'
Below with flash - and OHHHHH - GHOSTS!!
....yeah, I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with using the flash ...no, it makes more sense that it's a REAL GHOST!!

LOOK AT ALL THE GHOSTS IN THIS PICTURE!!!!!

But when you don't use a flash....there's none. Hmmmmm, I guess ghosts must really like the camera flash. Yup.

Honestly, just walking down Duval street at night was the scariest thing I saw.

Friday 6/8

Jacqui and Lauren stayed back, while the rest of us went on a fishing and snorkeling boat trip from 10:00 to 2:00.

We saw some dolphin

And we caught some barracuda

Saturday 6/9

Booooo, we had to pach up and leave Sunset Key. On our way back, we stopped at Islamorada for dinner, then drove back to Key Largo.

Our last sunset for the trip..............

Sunday 6/10

We all got to swim in the pool one last time Sunday morning

On the way back to the airport, we drove through Miami Beach...............

Jay, next time let's rent this boat for a week.
